Notes from over there

Garry Trudeau, proving once more that he is a much better person and American than our lousy lousy president has provided a space on his webpage for military personnel to write about their experiences overseas.
Youtube not getting so sucky

According to this article on E Online it looks like a bunch of videos that Viacom had ordered yanked from Youtube are now back on. I guess they are only not allowing full-length episodes of their shows, which makes sense. I hope they realized that one of the reasons Stephen Colobert is so popular is due to sites like Youtube that allow people to experience a quip he may have said the previous evening and then share that clip with friends and so on and so on. If the Republicans can use the internet in an intelligent way you would hope a large media corporation would too.

On that note I found the following video during lunch and I just can't express how much Stephen Colbert makes me laugh. Did you know that Stephen Hawking was an a-hole.

Wallowing in the mud

This stance isn't nearly as disgusting as when he implied that electing Democrats could create a smokin gun that is a mushroom cloud but he wants to be sure to let you know that the terrorists want you to vote Democrat. What a slime ball: "Vice-President Dick Cheney said today the increase of violence in Iraq is linked with efforts to influence the outcome of next week's elections in which Republicans are struggling to keep control of Congress.
"It's my belief that they're very sensitive of the fact that we've got an election scheduled and they can get on the websites like anybody else," Mr Cheney said.

He said al-Qaida and other elements were trying to "break the will of the American people" because "they think we don't have the stomach for the fight long-term."

Asked if the attacks were timed to influence the US elections, Mr Cheney said, "That's my belief.""

Make it Stop

You know, I don't really mind John Mellencamp writing a song for Chevrolet but is it really necessary to run the song every ten minutes during Sunday football? I'm not in the market for a new car but if I was I sure as hell wouldn't buy a Chevy even if they had the car I wanted. Please, enough. Give me some peace.

Camille Pagilia back in the house

I don't know how familiar both my readers are with Camille Paglia. If you've been checking this blog for more than a year I am sure you may have followed a link or two to something she has said. Any time Paglia is speaking about our country's politics and culture it's worth your time. Everything she says you may not agree with but you can't say what she says isn't thoughtful and intelligent. She was recently interviewed by Salon.com I have included a quote about Rice and Cheney and linked to the interview at the end.

"Every feminist who wants to smash the glass ceiling should realize she has a stake in Condi Rice's success. Rice is a brilliant woman, but diplomacy is an art. Preaching in steely tones sends the wrong message. This administration lacks deftness in international relations. Worst of the lot is Dick Cheney, with his lumpish provincialism. What a narrow, limited mind! His geopolitics is a vintage-1870s version of frontier Americanism, but he managed to impose it on the over-credulous new president when this Bush took office. It's all so simple to them: The majority of Iraqis and Iranians want peace and modernization, so let's impose democracy at the barrel of a gun. But what ignorance of history: The mass of the population always want to live their own lives; change is always driven by small, committed groups of ideologues and fanatics -- even in our own revolution. Representative democracy is a great ideal, but major shifts are rarely achieved by majority rule, which prefers the status quo."

Lock 'em up

I've said some pretty strong things over the years about Bush and Cheney and I stand by them all. I have yet to call them criminals. Those days are over. Check out this quote from an interview Cheney did two days ago:

"Q: Would you agree a dunk in water is a no-brainer if it can save lives?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: It's a no-brainer for me, but for a while there, I was criticized as being the Vice President "for torture." We don't torture. That's not what we're involved in. We live up to our obligations in international treaties that we're party to and so forth. But the fact is, you can have a fairly robust interrogation program without torture, and we need to be able to do that.

And thanks to the leadership of the President now, and the action of the Congress, we have that authority, and we are able to continue to program."

These guys torture people. Torture is illegal and torture doesn't work. Not only are Bush and Cheney criminals, they are, as Trudeau said, willfully ignorant. I heard Nancy Peolosi say on 60 Minutes that if she becomes speaker of the house there will not be investigations into this administration. I say to hell with that. Investigate these scumbags and get them out of office. They are a disgrace.

How bad is Dick Cheney?

"Far more interesting is Isikoff and Corn's exploration of the mental world that the administration inhabits. They recount that in December 2001, Scooter Libby read aloud to a visiting journalist a famous passage from Winston Churchill's memoirs about being named prime minister: ''I felt as if I were walking with destiny, and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial.'' Libby declared that these words could be applied to Cheney after Sept. 11. Hubris? Megalomania may be more like it."

That's what has always driven me crazy about the Bush people: their use of Churchillian language. Without the presence of a real international threat they do what they can to create fear in the public and then they attempt to orate like Churchill when they pledge to meet this threat. To me they fail utterly but I guess they're good enough to fool about half the people most of the time.

Garry Trudeau on Bush

"I think he is smart but willfully ignorant, and he uses his ignorance for strategic advantage, which is appalling. He substitutes belief for thought. It protects him from self doubt."
Shuttle liftoff pictures taken from outer space

These are the cooolest pictures I have seen in a while
Politicians are scared of Colbert

Sounds to me they are more scared of being asked real questions and it's sad that only someone on a fake news show does it consistantly.
Shoulda locked the little creep up and threw away the key

Obvioulsy this young lady should have been classified as an enemy combatant and locked up indefinately. A little water boarding would have been taught her a lesson also. It's time America stopped coddling its children.

He lost Rooney

Last night at the end of 60 Minutes Andy Rooney pleaded with the president to tell him why we are in Iraq. A question asked many times by many people that the president has answered many different ways, all of them unsatisfactory. I tell you what, if you lost Andy Rooney you lost middle America, monkey boy.

That new bill the prez just signed

I've been reading this blog for a while now and he's had a lot of good thoughtful things to say about our world and he wrote this about that horrible bill Bush just rammed through our useless congress:

"The republic effectively ended today with the signing of the "Military Commissions Act." This law made into a farce the "Great Republic" as Winston Churchill described the United States. The forms continue but the substance is gone.

Bonaparte styled himself "Emperor of the French Republic" but he was still king.

With this new law the country became a place in which the president/commander in chief can classify whomever he likes as an enemy combatant beyond the reach of habeas corpus. This means that the executive branch can arrest and hold without trial anyone in the world (including American citizens). He can also hold that prisoner indefinitely without confronting the detained with the case against him/her or the evidence involved.

Americans, you are now "subjects" and not citizens. Accept your new role.

If you watched Generals Hayden and Pace who were artfully positioned behind the sovereign at the signing, you saw a lot of blinking. They know what they have done.

At the end of his program tonight Keith Olberman said to Professor Jonathan Turley, who had commented on the import of the day, "I'll see you in Guantanomo."

Maybe we can start a chess tournament."

Bill Maher, his making sense resurgence continues

"If you think the worst thing Congress doesn't protect young people from is Mark Foley, then wake up and smell the burning planet. The - the ice caps are cracking, the coral reefs are bleaching, and our poisoned groundwater has turned spinach into a "side dish of mass destruction." Read the labels on your food. It turns out the healthiest thing you can put in your body is Mark Foley's penis.

But that's America for you: a red herring culture, always scared by the wrong things. The fact is, there are a lot of creepy, middle-aged men out there lusting for your kids. They work for MTV, the pharmaceutical industry, McDonald's, Marlboro, and K Street.

And recently, there's been a rash of strangers making their way onto school campuses and targeting your children for death. They're called military recruiters. More young Americans were crippled in Iraq last month than any month in the last two years. And the scandal is that Mark Foley wants to show them a good time before they go?

When will our closeted gay congressmen learn, our boys aren't for pleasure, they're for cannon fodder? Why aren't Democrats and the media hammering away every day about who we're supposed to be fighting for over there, and what the plan is? Yes, Mark Foley was wrong to ask teenagers how long their penis was. But at least someone on Capitol Hill was asking questions.

You know who else is grabbing your kids at too young an age? Merck, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline. By convincing you that your kids are depressed, hyperactive or suffering from ADD. In the last decade, the number of children prescribed anti-psychotic drugs in America increased by over 400%. Which means either that our children are going insane-which we might look on as a problem-or more likely, we have, for profit, created a nation of little junkies.

So, stop with the righteous indignation about predators. This whole country is trying to get inside your kid's pants, because that's where he keeps his wallet.

I don't care - I don't care if Mark Foley had been asking boys to describe their penis because I have some sad news for you: your kid is so larded out on Cheetohs and YooHoo, he can't even see his penis. So many of our kids are fat drug addicts nowadays, it's almost as if Rush Limbaugh had puppies!

So we can pretend that the biggest threat to our children is some creep on the Internet, or we can admit it's us. Because when your son can't find France on a map, or touch his toes with his hands, or understand that the ads on TV are lying, including the one where the Marine turns into Lancelot-then the person f***ing him...is you."

I'd watch his show more but I just can't get past his horrible horrible hair. Doesn't he have people he pays to make sure he doesn't look so creepy?

All you need is talking points

I found this via another website but if you get a chance check out the Republican party's web page where you can find what they want you to talk about when you call a talk radio show.
Fairweather fan

Sure, I may be a fairweather fan but that won't stop me from enjoying this playoff run the Detroit Tigers are having. The game at Comerica Park when the Tigers beat the Yankees, ESPN brought Ernie Harwell into the booth and interviewed him for an inning. After talking to him for a while they actually let Ernie call an inning. Since I left Michigan in 1986 I can count on one hand the number of times I've heard Ernie Harwell call a baseball game. It was such a nostaligic moment. I was beaming like a little kid when the Tiger pitcher struck out a Yankee hitter on a called third strike and Ernie said, "He stood there like the house by the side of the road." Amazing. The voice of my childhood returns for a 30 minutes and makes my week with one of his trademark sayings. Another nice moment was when the Tiger pitcher threw a real nice strike that the hitter watched go by and Ernie got excited and called it a strike before the umpire did. It's such a different experience to watch a baseball game when the announcer is pulling for the same team you are.

I think I learned a lesson during this playoff season. I am surprised by how much I am rooting for the Tigers. I am really pulling for this team. I've tried to change affiliations. I even tried to switch to the Cubs and I was very familiar with the Cubs team when they made that playoff run a few years back and I was pulling for them but I didn't have near the emotional involvement that I have had with this Tiger team. It's not even the players so much, it's just comforting to see people chearing for players wearing that Olde English "D." I was indoctrinated early and I am going to have to accept that I am a Tigers fan whether I want to be or not.

OK, one more panorama

This one is of downtown Charlotte taken from a parking lot across the street from where Midtown Mall used to be. One thing about rampant development is that it gives you views of the city that weren't there before, at least until the new building goes up.

One of the things I've really started to like about making the panoramas with Autostitch is the views you get of the sky. You can really see the pattern of cloud cover with these views Autostitch creates.

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

No, not more panoramas!

You bet. What better way to spend your day off than driving around town trying to get good good shots of downtown?

Monday, October 09, 2006

More? OK, you got it

I know you are clamoring for another panorama of Freedom Park. Enjoy.

I can't help myself

I went to the main library today to do some eBay speculating on 16 mm films. I doubt I'll make my $13 back but it was worth a shot. While I was there I took a panorama shot of downtown from the top floor of the parking deck at 6th and College. It was a blustery and cloudy day. I tried to do a 360 degree panorama but there was too much interference in the foreground so I'll have to be happy with this 180 degree shot. Maybe it's a bit less that 180 degrees but it's close.

Criticize vice president, go to jail

I hope the next time you are close to the vice president you are smart enough to keep your mouth shut. Is a night in jail really worth telling off Dick Cheney? I'd have to say yes. This reminds me of that guy after Katrina that told Cheney to fuck off. He almost got arrested for that. Man, these guys suck.

An experiment

I don't know how this will work but I'll give it a shot.

Howdy

Haven't been posting much lately. I've been spending too much time arguing with these idiot conservatives at another blog. I'm going to stop that, it's like arguing with a brick wall. These guys are so whacked that they believe torture works, Clinton is solely responsible for 9/11, the Iraq invasion was a good idea, there were no lies by the administration leading up to the war, Islam is a religion of hate and those that oppose the Bush administration are traitors. It's impossible to argue with people like that because all they can do is insult you. Screw those fascists, I'm staying away. It is hard to stay away, though, because they will feel like they won something but I'm tired of being called a traitor because I oppose everything George Bush stands for. Ah well, I'd be worried if those clowns didn't view me as a traitor because if they didn't that would mean that I think just like them and that would be much worse. I have to remind myself that anyone so far to the right is probably just another Foley waiting to happen. It was Bill Hicks talking about Jesse Helms that said anyone that far to the right is hiding a dark secret.

Baseball

I watched the Tigers and the Yankees playoff game last night. You know, I used to love Derek Jeter but now he's a Tiger killer and he just pisses me off. How is it that he is so good in October? It really is something else. Even when he is clobbering your home team he's fun to watch. The bastard.

I haven't watched that many Tiger games this year. I've followed the team all year and know the personnel but I feel a little like a fair weather fan. I've kept up with the team and was optimistic when Alan Trammell took over a few years ago and I followed the careers of Justin Thompson and Jeff Weaver. So, I've kept up. The only thing about this Tiger team that worries me is the closer, Todd Jones. He just seems to make the 9th inning a little more dramatic that it need be. Putting guys on base against the Yankees in the 9th inning is just not going to work. It's not good in general but will really bite you with a lineup as loaded as the Yankees.

Speaking of baseball

I'll bet your wondering what a 1911 Ty Cobb baseball card looks like. Your quest is at an end. If you thought that was lovely there are more at this site. That Library of Congress website is a gold mine.

Nice blog

I just picked this blog up a few months ago. It's written by Katrina Huevel and she's an editor at The Nation. All I can say is, thank god for The Nation and the New York Review of Books or Bush and company would really be getting away with this shite.

A quote from Huevel's most recent blog post: "It is now painfully clear that the very Republicans whose job it is to protect us and our children from danger have failed repeatedly, because they're too busy protecting their own political power. The evidence is as overwhelming and repugnant as Mark Foley's emails."
Dick Cheney

"This is not law. This is casuistry, the detritus of another perfect storm, the one that occurred when the deferments of the Vietnam years met the ardor of the Reagan Revolution."
