Old Slides

I think I may have identified another person from my collection of old slides from Michigan. This slide is dated 1954 and the gentleman on the right is identified as Ken Granquist on the yellowed note paper that came with the slides.

Today I found an obituary from January of this year for a Kenneth H. Granquist, an 87 year old retired Lutheran pastor. Comparing the slide photo with the photo on the obituary and the fact that he was a pastor in Grand Rapids, MI sometime after he was ordained in 1952 leads me to think it is the same person.

So far he is the fifth person I have identified from these slides. The other four people I have identified are Theodore and Emma Schmalzried and Claude and Gertrude Schmalzried.

Brad Keselowski Drunk on TV

Sure, he's drunk but I'll give him credit for keeping it together long enough to sound coherent on live TV.

Linn Cove Viaduct

One of my favorite places on the Blue Ridge Parkway is the Linn Cove Viaduct. Driving up on that for the first time is truly remarkable. I may have posted pictures of the viaduct here before but these are from the last couple of months. I drove across it once in a thick fog around midnight. I don't recommend that.

Today the lazy blogger found pictures of the Linn Cove Viaduct on Flickr. Feast your dadgum eyes.

Panthers vs. Broncos

Sunday I went to the Panthers game with my old friend, Granville, and his old lady Jess and a mutual friend Bree. It was an forgettable game, the Panthers were beaten soundly, 36-14. Around the beginning of the 3rd quarter the usual outcries and groans from the home crowd you hear when their team is losing turned to depressed silence. Football is one of those sports where you can tell when a game was over. Early in the third quarter the Panthers were beaten. I won't say they rolled over but at that point they were no longer competitive. Normally, I don't leave pro sporting events where I have paid a good chunk of change to sit in the stands but I didn't purchase this ticket, Granville did, and my three companions were ready so halfway through the third quarter, after watching one more series by the Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, we left.

It was worth it to see Peyton Manning play, at least. He threw several incredible passes. A couple of times he threw the ball well before the receiver made his last break and the receiver ran to a spot and the ball was waiting for him when he got there. That was really something to see. Other than that is was an ass football game.

At least I got a panorama out of it. This is the view from the north side of the stadium.

Old Slide

A couple of years ago I purchased a two batches of slides on eBay. They were taken by someone who worked for the Michigan department of transportation as a surveyor. I held off on this last batch because there are no documentation to go with it. The first group I scanned came with a few sheets of paper with information on each photograph. So far I have come across some nice pictures of a trip to Mackinac Island in 1964 and a shooting range from 1959. The photo below is my favorite so far. It's the first picture of a set that includes some shots of a firing range. This is a couple just setting off on a road trip, standing in front of their giant land yacht.
